Poster 161: Musculoskeletal Adaptations to Baseball Pitching Differ Markedly Between Righthand Dominant Versus Lefthand Dominant Pitchers

چکیده

Objectives: Musculoskeletal adaptations on the dominant arm of baseball pitchers are typically (1) a gain in glenohumeral external rotation (ER) range motion (ROM), (2) loss internal (IR) ROM, (3) posterior shoulder tightness, (4) weakness empty can test, and (5) increased IR strength. The purpose this study was to determine if these differed between righthand (RHD) versus lefthand (LHD) pitchers. Based recent work it hypothesized that ROM would be less apparent LHD pitchers, but strength not differ RHD Methods: Shoulder were measured 327 preseason screening (91 tested more than one season, 418 player-seasons, 322 vs. 96 LHD). There 157 youth (age 11-15 yr) 146 adolescent 16-17 115 adult 18-24 yr). ER (Tyler test) with digital level. Empty can, ER, scapular retraction hand-held dynamometer. Differences nondominant arms, age groups, assessed using mixed model analysis variance (mean SD reported). Results: Adaptations had 11±10° (P<0.001) no difference (0±10°, P=0.685). unaffected by (P=0.829). for (10±11°) greater (5±10°). Posterior tightness affected dominance (P=0.038); there (youth 6±13° 10±11°, P=0.156; 5±10° 8±15°) (6±8° 1±11°, P=0.032). The relationship between age and baseball pitching kinematics in professional baseball pitchers.

Joint range of motion and physical capacities have been shown to change with age in both throwing athletes and non-athletes. The age of professional baseball pitchers could span from late teens to mid-40s. However, the effects of age on the pitching kinematics among professional baseball pitchers are still unknown. In this study, 67 healthy professional baseball pitchers were tested using a 3D ...

Lumbopelvic control and pitching performance of professional baseball pitchers.

This study assessed the correlation between lumbopelvic control during a single-leg balancing task and in-game pitching performance in Minor-League baseball pitchers. Seventy-five healthy professional baseball pitchers performed a standing lumbopelvic control test during the last week of spring training for the 2008 and 2009 seasons while wearing a custom-designed testing apparatus, the "Level ...

A Biomechanical Comparison of Pitching From a Mound Versus Flat Ground in Adolescent Baseball Pitchers

BACKGROUND Baseball professionals believe that pitching from a mound can increase the stresses placed on the body. HYPOTHESIS There is no difference in kinematics or kinetics in pitching from a mound versus flat-ground conditions in adolescent baseball pitchers. STUDY DESIGN Laboratory investigation. METHODS The fastball pitching motions of 15 adolescent baseball pitchers, including upper...

Rate of return to pitching and performance after Tommy John surgery in Major League Baseball pitchers.

BACKGROUND Medial ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction is a common procedure performed on Major League Baseball (MLB) pitchers in the United States. PURPOSE To determine (1) the rate of return to pitching (RTP) in the MLB after UCL reconstruction, (2) the RTP rate in either the MLB and minor league combined, (3) performance after RTP, and (4) the difference in the RTP rate and perfo...

Changes in shoulder and elbow passive range of motion after pitching in professional baseball players.

BACKGROUND The overhead throwing athlete has unique range of motion characteristics of the shoulder and elbow. Numerous theories exist to explain these characteristics; however, the precise cause is not known. Although it is accepted that range of motion is altered, the acute effect of baseball pitching on shoulder and elbow range of motion has not been established. HYPOTHESIS There will be a...
